**** FSCL WINS 2nd Annual  International (St. Patrick’s Day Festival) Weekend cricket tournament****

–    Syed Hasan brings home the trophy in his maiden tournament as FSCL skipper

–    Naveed Ahmed lights up the IPC grounds with his batting fireworks

–    Faizan Maqsood adjudged Tournament MVP for his allround heroics with the bat and ball

–    Hussain Haider adjudged best bowler for his outstanding performances with the ball

March 19, 2012: Congratulations to Florida Southeast Cricket League (FSCL) for winning the 2nd Annual  International (St. Patrick’s Day Festival) Weekend cricket tournament. This tournament was played  on March 16 & 17, 2012, at the picturesque International Polo Club grounds in Palm Beach Florida. FSCL was the dominant team winning both games convincingly to claim the winner’s trophy. On Friday, March 16, FSCL played against the International All stars comprising of selected players from England and Ireland. The final was played on Saturday, March 17, between FSCL and South Florida Cricket Alliance (SFCA) after SFCA defeated US All Stars on Friday to setup the title clash on Saturday. In the final, SFCA won the toss and elected to bat first. SFCA got off to a flying start and were cruising at  53 for 1 after 5 Overs on the back of an aggressive batting display by Timmy Surujbally and Ken Wright. However, Naveed Ahmed provided the crucial breakthrough for FSCL when he clean bowled Ken Wright for 16. Then the introduction of Hussain Haider and other spinners put the brakes on SFCA. First, Hussain clean bowled Timmy on the second ball of his first over after he flighted one up and Timmy went for the big swipe, missed the line after the ball turned viciously and rattled the stumps. Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals. Syed Hasan was economical in his 4 Overs giving only 17 runs. Zach Sattaur bowled well for figures of 1 for 30 in 4 Overs. However, the young duo of Hussain Haider and Faizan Maqsood were the pick of the bowlers. Faizan with his fiery pace took 3 wickets for 18 runs. Hussain Haider bowled his off spinners brilliantly and took 3 wickets for 30 runs including the prized wicket of Timmy Surujbally. SFCA was restricted to 136 runs and could not bat out the allotted 20 Overs. Replying to SFCA’s modest target of 136 runs, FSCL got off to a scintillating start on the back of Naveed Ahmed’s batting fireworks. Naveed who is well known in south Florida cricket circles for his aggressive batting style did not disappoint his many fans in attendance. Naveed Ahmed punished the SFCA bowlers by scoring 42 runs that included 3 massive sixes and 4 glorious boundaries. SFCA had no answer to Naveed’s onslaught. However, After Naveed was dismissed, SFCA fought back to stem the flow of runs. After Naveed’s dismissal, sensible batting by the FSCL middle order brought FSCL within striking distance of the SFCA total. Durgaprasad Choubey and Varun Penmatsa consolidated the FSCL innings by scoring 15 runs and 16 runs respectively. Syed Hasan played a captain’s knock of 24 runs that included 1 six and 1 boundary. Hasan curbed his natural aggression to play a responsible innings. Coming in late Faizan Maqsood blasted 19 runs that included 3 boundaries including 18 in one over from Glen Anglin that sealed the game for FSCL. Zach Sattaur, another young prospect from FSCL and Hussain Haider were at the crease when FSCL overhauled SFCA total for a convincing win. The result was never in doubt as FSCL was always in control of the game. Timmy was the best SFCA bowler on display taking 2 wickets for 22 runs. Faizan Maqsood was adjudged the man of the match for the finals for his brilliant all round batting and bowling display. Said a happy Rizwan Mohammed, President of FSCL, after the final, “First, I want to acknowledge International Polo Club (IPC) and the tournament organizers for hosting this fabulous tournament in the beautiful IPC grounds. Special thanks to MAQ Qureshi who co-sponsored the event and was instrumental in inviting the FSCL team to participate in this years event. I am very proud of the performance given by the young team. We had a plan to showcase our young players and the young players did not disappoint. Congratulations to Syed Hasan who brought home the prestigious trophy in his very first outing as FSCL skipper, ably supported by Rajat Verma his deputy. Hasan marshaled his resources well and made the right moves in both games. The whole team did well but I must praise Faizan Maqsood and Hussain Haider who made critical contributions at key points in the game to seal the victory after Naveed Ahmed provided the platform on both days with his special batting display. Debutant Wicket keeper Farhan Samana, responsible for 4 dismissals, also grabbed the opportunity and was outstanding behind the stumps on both days. Thanks also to the selectors for making the bold moves in selecting this young team. This augurs well for our future, so best wishes for continued success to FSCL.” Scores in brief: FSCL vs SFCA; Match Played at IPC on 17-Mar-2012 SFCA – 136 All Out in 19.2 Overs Timmy Surujbally 31 (3 sixes and 2 fours); Ken Wright 16 (2 sixes and 1 four); Faizan 3 for 18; Hussain Haider 3 for 30; Syed Hasan 1 for 17; Zach Sattaur 1 for 30. Faizan Maqsood took 2 wickets for 15 runs, Hussain Haider took 3 wickets for 25 runs, while Zach Sattaur and Syed Hasan took 2 wickets each. In reply, FSCL knocked off the required runs in the 18th over. Naveed Ahmed scored a quickfire 32 runs with 1 six and 5 boundaries. Syed Hasan scored 28 runs with 2 sixes and 1 boundary. ****FSCL Panthers win BIG Broward Cricket League Championship:

December 19, 2010 –  Congratulations to FSCL Panthers for winning the inaugural BIG Broward Cricket League tournament at Central Broward Regional Park (CBRP). The Panthers went undefeated in the entire tournament and beat the SFCA Cavaliers in a low scoring final. After winning the toss the Panther’s skipper Priyantha Liyanage sent in the Cavaliers to bat. Hector Wallace who has been in fine form the entire tournament  scored a quick fire 42 with the help of 3 fours and 3 sixes to give the Cavaliers a flying start. However, when Hussain Haider was brought on in the 6th over, Haider stemmed the flow of runs and dismissed Wallace who was caught by Pieter Potgeiter for his 42 runs. After Wallace’s dismissal wickets started to fall at regular intervals and the Cavaliers were dismissed for 110 runs. Haider was the pick of the Panthers bowlers, he took 3 wickets for 15 runs in his 4 overs. Nasir Javed, the wily leg spinner in tandem with Haider kept the scoring in check. Javed gave away a paltry 16 runs in his 4 over spell. Haider has been in excellent form this season. Haider was selected to the 18 member USA squad that was called to camp in preparation for the upcoming tour of the US team to Hong Kong early next year. Skipper Liyanage took 2 wickets for 8 runs in his 4 overs while Syed Hasan took 2 wickets for 16 runs in his 3 over spell. In reply, the Panthers never looked in trouble on their way to reaching the winning target. Neil Mungal, the Panther opener anchored the innings on his way to a responsible 32 that included 2 boundaries. Farhat Ullah showed flashes of brilliance during his brief knock of 12 that included a majestic 6 over the third man fence and 1 four. Ashton Denis also played a very useful unbeaten knock of 30 that included 1 six and 2 fours. Both Neil and Ashton followed the game plan set by the skipper and delivered a convincing 6 wicket victory for the Panthers. The young Cavaliers team showed a lot of poise and fight in defending the modest total. Herlando Johnson was the best Cavalier bowler on display, he took 2 wickets for 10 runs in his 4 overs. In a glittering ceremony after the game, Big League CEO, Salman Ahmed, presented the winners with a $2,000 check. Former West Indies opening batsman and a cricket legend, Gordon Greenidge, was the chief guest and gave a rousing speech to everyone present and spoke about the importance of using cricket to build character for the youths. The President of Big League, Shafaqat Chowdhary, was also in attendance and thanked the gathering in his brief speech. The runners up, Cavaliers, took home $1,000 while the third place team, Gators, were presented a check for $500. Ken Singh was adjudged the Player of the tournament for his many match winning performances during the tournament. Ken’s last over heroics against the Raiders will forever be etched in South Florida cricket fans memory when he hit two towering sixes off the last 2 balls to deliver victory for the Panthers against the Raiders. Rizwan Mohammed was adjudged the best bowler for the tournament for his haul of 15 wickets. Rizwan was virtually unplayable and had all top batsmen in trouble during the entire tournament. Both Ken and Rizwan were presented with new bats by Big League USA for their performances. Congratulations to Big League USA for putting on a great tournament and for giving a chance to local cricketers to play in the only cricket stadium in United States.

***Broward CC wins 2010 Division 1 Robin C. Mirjah 30 Overs Competition

December 12, 2010 – It had all the ingredients for a fantastic game of cricket from the minute it was set. The #1 seeded team in the league, Florida International vs the #2 seeded team, Broward Cricket Club. The same teams met in the first week of the 30 over competition and Florida International won by 12runs. However, on this beautiful day for cricket with not a cloud in the sky at Brian Piccolo Park, Broward CC would go on to win their first title in over a decade. Broward, having 8 out of its 11 players being Under 25 years old is undoubtedly the youngest team to ever win a championship in South Florida. With four of the best young bastmen in Florida: Steven Taylor, Alastair Khan, Anil Bhawani and Ryan Ramnarine the Broward boys decided to bat and opened with Steven Taylor and Ryan Ramnarine. Off to a dashing start, Steven taking 16 off the first over, he was dismissed the first ball of Kashif Chugtai’s over caught behind. Broward’s captain, Alastair Khan joined Ryan at the crease and they consolidated and built a good partnership of 74 runs in just 10 overs before the captain was caught on the long-on boundary for a stroke filled 27. This brought the very talented Anil Bhawani to the crease. Ryan Ramnarine played a beautiful knock of 55 with 5 boundaries before being C&B by Syed Hassan. Rhaines Boothe, the coach/player of BCC, joined Anil and they had a partnership of 93 runs in 11 overs with Anil blasting 74* and Boothe 40*. Anil played a brilliant knock consisting of 3 sixes and 4 fours. Broward scored 232/3 at the end of 30 overs. In reply with a high total to chase, openers Naveed Ahmed and M. Saquib got off to a similar flying start, scoring 38 in the first 5 overs of play before Saquib was caught at covers off the bowling of Anand Maharaj. This brought one of the best bastmen in the league out to the crease, Syed Hassan and he made the game extremely interesting by scoring a quick fire 66 with 6 fours and 3 massive sixes. The experienced Shabir Chaudery played a good knock of 28 but was outdone by outstanding fielding by Anil Bhawani. With 2 run outs and some good depth bowling from Alastair Khan and Steven Taylor, Florida International ended up 23 shy of victory. Steven Taylor 5 overs 28 runs 2 wickets was the pick of the BCC bowlers. Ryan Ramnarine was adjudicated MVP of the match for his knock of 55 runs, 2 wickets, and 2 brilliant catches. It was one of the best finals in a long time and displayed the talent of a lot of the young upcoming stars in the Florida Southeast Cricket League.

***2010 SER Tournament Update:

Congratulations to FSCL for going undefeated in the 2010 SER cricket tournament! After the washed out game on Friday, June 4, against Atlanta Georgia Cricket Conference, FSCL beat Mid Atlantic Cricket Conference by 149 runs on Saturday, June 5. Finally, on Sunday, June 6, FSCL defeated Georgia Supreme Cricket League by 9 runs in a thrilling and exciting finale. Please see below for detailed reports on each day: June 4 – FSCL vs Atlanta Georgia Cricket Conference(AGCC) played at Central Broward Regional Park (Main Stadium): Magnificent batting by Victor Charles who scored 85 runs in 64 balls with 10 sixes and 1 boundary helped FSCL make 210 runs. He was supported by Farhat Ullah who scored 48 runs that included 1 six and 6 boundaries. Ashton Denis also chipped in with 30 runs. Amin Khan was the best bowler for AGCC taking 3 for 43 while Nimir Desai, Japen Patel, and Jibran Gul chipped in with 2 wickets each. In reply AGCC was 44 for 2 when rain came in and play had to be abandoned. Ken Singh took both the AGCC wickets that fell. Victor Charles was adjudged Man of the Match for his blistering score of 85. June 5 – FSCL vs Mid Atlantic Cricket Conference(MACC) played at Miramar Regional Park (North): Victor Charles who is playing only his second SER regional tournament dominated the proceedings again on the second day and top scored with an unbeaten 144 with the help of 7 sixes and 12 fours. His full repertoire of strokes was on display as he drove, lofted, pulled, and hooked with disdain as he single handedly took the team on his shoulders and helped FSCL make a mammoth 426 for 4 in 50 Overs. He was supported in his efforts by Ashton Denis who scored 85 with 5 sixes and 11 fours. MACC fielders could only look on helplessly as the ball soared over the ropes or crashed to the boundary many times during the FSCL innings. The brutal display of power hitting, lovely strokes, and delightful batting from the blades of Victor Charles and Ashton Denis was enjoyed by all spectators in attendance. Syed Hasan chipped in with a useful 51 off 39 balls that included 6 boundaries. Neil Mungal hit 5 fours in his score of 43 that came off 60 balls. Waseem Shazada scored a quick fire 40 that included two sixes and 4 boundaries. Victor’s knock will be remembered for a long time in the South Florida cricket annals as well as the southeast region leagues. He is in murderous form this competition and showed no mercy as he sent MACC on a leather hunt. Victor is batting with vengeance and looks like he is making a statement to the selectors who ignored him in the previous years. The crowd was thoroughly entertained by the lusty hitting of Victor and Ashton. Boundaries flowed freely during the whole inning and MACC bowlers never troubled the FSCL batsmen. In reply MACC was bowled out for 277. Mike Neuson was the only batsman who offered some resistance and the top scored with 68. H Patel scored 42, Sunny Singh with 36, and Sanjay Patel with 33 also chipped in to help MACC. Hyder Hussain was the best FSCL bowler on display as he took 3 for 42 in his 10 overs. Victor Charles was adjudged Man of the Match for his brilliant innings of 144. June 6 – FSCL vs Georgia Supreme Cricket League(GSCL) at Miramar Regional Park: FSCL won the toss and elected to bat. Farhat Ullah and Neil Mungal went after the GSCL bowlers from the start. Farhat scored a brilliant 47 with the help of 6 boundaries.  Neil Mungal played an achor role and scored a valuable 57 with the help of 4 fours. Neil steadied the FSCL innings and was involved in many useful partnerships. Just when Syed Hasan was beginning to come into his element and was looking to post a big score he threw away his wicket after a good knock of 31 that included 5 hits to the fence. FSCL was 170 for 4 and looking a post a huge total. However, the side collapsed after the umpire allowed GSCL to take a new ball after 34 overs. The umpires did not follow the laws of cricket and despite protests from the FSCL captain and management GSCL was given a new ball. With the advantage of the new ball GSCL ran through the middle order and FSCL was bowled out for 236. Only Waseem Shazada offered some resistance and scored 19 runs with three scorching hits to the fence. E Dyer had figures of 3 for 46, J Slocumb took 2 for 41, and A Hooper took 2 for 38. GSCL lost their first wicket in the first over when L Johnson was given out LBW to Ken Singh for a duck. This was a controversial decision and looked like the umpire was making up for the LBW he missed on the previous ball. Alexander top scored with 45, Harper scored 33, M Mumby scored 32,and T Powell scored 23. Leon Garrick was run out for 9 when he tried to take a cheeky single. Hussain Hyder got the important wickets of M Mumby and T Powell in one over. Syed Hasan took 2 for 17 in 4 overs. In an exciting end Pieter Potgeiter delivered the final blow when he clean bowled Husut with GSCL still needing 9 runs. Neil Mungal was adjudged Man of the Match for his valuable knock of 57 and four dismissals behind the stumps. Victor Charles also received the trophy for Best Batsman of the series and was declared tournament MVP as well. Last years winner GSCL went home empty handed even though they had many star players including ex West Indies test players and Jamaica first class players. SFCA must also be disappointed with their youth experiment.  Congratulations to the FSCL executive, the selectors who put the team together, and the skipper Priyantha Liyanage for a job well done!
